Saving Mom-and-Pop Shops: Retaining Small, Minority-Owned, "Legacy" Businesses Through Historic Preservation

Bennett King, M.A.H.P. '25, will speak with program director, Melanie Lytle, about the importance of minority-owned and -operated "legacy" businesses in communities because of their role in retaining generational continuity and shared history, providing goods and services geared toward the community and culture, and supporting local art, cultural and tastes. He will talk about the risks to these types of places that are threatened by gentrification and how historic preservation programs and policies can be part of the solution.  

Bennett is the 2023 Goucher M.A. in Historic Preservation Alumni Prize recipient for best first-year paper and a Product Strategy Consultant.
