The Power of Story: From Aristotle to A.I.
Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM
Eastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00
This talk overviews the traditional Aristotelean narrative structure that is embedded in all Western storytelling and articulates a new approach to incorporating the foundations of universal storytelling into modern digital communication. Together we will look at how emotional connection and universal semiotics are still critical components of modern communication that amplify message, persuasion and impact for diverse global audiences.
Dissecting the modern SCR report structure alongside universal symbology and the 3 Act narrative formula, students will understand how simple formulas render complex, meaningful subtext that can amplify strategic impact, and enhance communication outcomes. Students will explore point of view, archetypal perspective, creation of meaning through subtext, and how to engage modern tools to become a stronger storyteller.
Jenna Oliver has diverse leadership experience in education and communication. She completed her Master's in Media Studies at The New School University, where she participated as a fellow in a prestigious think tank of poets, professors, legislators, and activists working to impact global change.
Oliver has worked with thought leaders from all over the world in various capacities. One mentor that influenced her work significantly was Dennis Brutus, the acclaimed South African poet who taught her the foundations of storytelling. This inspired her to publish an original workshop incorporating the foundations of universal storytelling into modern communication.
Oliver has taught at various institutions over the past two decades including: The New School, Regis University, Colorado State University, Metropolitan State University, and The Colorado Film School. She has received appointments, accolades, and awards for her work in education, communication, and marketing. Oliver was appointed to the board of directors for the Public Education and Business Coalition and has influenced and created the strategic communications and marketing infrastructure for several higher education institutions, non-profits, and government entities. She brings a wealth of practical experience and theoretical knowledge to Goucher, along with a passion for mentoring and facilitating student success.
